Driven by Design: How Bus Éireann and Tailored Image Put Employees in the Front Seat

Following extensive driver workshops, wearer trials and a fully interactive working group process, Bus Éireann has launched its new practical, durable, safe and professional uniform. Manufactured and delivered by Tailored Image, this new uniform suite was designed not just for Bus Éireann staff, but with them, through a collaborative process that has resulted in a uniform to be proud of.

The brief for Tailored Image, as identified by drivers, was to deliver a uniform that they could feel comfortable and confident wearing all day – one that would achieve a fully inclusive result designed with different body shapes and roles in mind. High on the priority list was to provide a distinctive approach for summer months – traditionally a difficult period for drivers, when the traditional shirt and tie style could cause discomfort and overheating. From a corporate perspective, Bus Éireann were also keen to prioritise sustainability and incorporate recycled and sustainably sourced fabrics into the uniform.

Change from Traditional Tailoring

Trousers, skirts and shirting have also all received an overhaul thanks to this latest uniform project. The redesigned trousers are now available in male classic and tailored fits, allowing for a greater choice of style and comfort. In response to a call for greater flexibility for employees, the trousers now includes a comfort waistband, ideal for long journeys.

Shirts are now manufactured from 70% sustainably sourced cotton which has helped Bus Éireann to progress towards its sustainability targets. This move has also seen a benefit in breathability and was one of the favourite garments during the wearer trials. A new colour twist has also been introduced, with drivers in a grey micro check shirt and supervisors now donning white shirts, along with their grey and black scarf or ties, to allow them to be easily identified by members of the public and drivers alike.

For a layering effect, both a long-sleeved and sleeveless ¼-zip jumper are also available. These have become popular choices amongst drivers for additional warmth without reducing the professionalism of the uniform
For garage staff, new work trousers, a softshell, long sleeve top, and gilet provide the strength needed for day to day tasks, without compromising comfort.

Winter and Summer Solutions

A newly designed 2-in-1 softshell features removable sleeves which transform the garment into a gilet, providing flexibility in changing weather. It now also includes a hood for rainy days and wind cuffs for added protection against the elements.
The anorak layer is fully waterproof, an important feature for the Irish climate, with a detachable hood and a new pull-string waist for a more tailored look.

One of the most requested changes to the uniform during the wearer feedback sessions was the addition of a summer wardrobe to provide comfort and breathability for warmer days. A new polo shirt and shorts have been added which are lightweight, breathable and a welcome addition to the warm-weather range. This new range was requested, trialled and approved by drivers.

Customer Feedback

Michelle Peacock, Head of Customer Experience for Bus Éireann, commented:

‘We recently completed a comprehensive review of the Bus Éireann driver uniform in collaboration with Tailored Image and our driver colleagues across the network. The project focused on enhancing comfort, practicality, and overall wearer experience while ensuring the uniform continues to reflect the professionalism and identity of Bus Éireann. A key outcome of the review was the introduction of a dedicated summer wardrobe option for drivers for the first time, providing greater flexibility and comfort during warmer periods.

The approach was highly collaborative, with valuable feedback from drivers helping to shape the final designs and garment selections. This engagement ensured the updated uniform better meets the day-to-day operational needs of employees while supporting wellbeing and presentation standards. The completed project represents a positive step forward in modernising the driver uniform offering and demonstrates Bus Éireann’s ongoing commitment to listening to employees and continuously improving the working environment and employee experience.’

Tailored Image Managing Director Bernard Birt added:

‘This represents another important milestone in the uniform story for Bus Éireann. We have been fortunate to have worked with the team there for many years; indeed they were one of our first big contracts, and during this time we have worked together on transitioning from a very formal uniform to a more contemporary and comfortable solution. This latest departure has it all – driver input, innovative fabrics, sustainable outcomes and we’re delighted to be a part of it all.’
